MK Review: Renaissance Festival

By Michelle Knopf June 20, 2019

My son and I have been reading the Magic Tree House book series, which transport young readers to different periods in history. Stepping into the gates of the Koroneburg Renaissance Festival made us feel like the characters of these books. We were transported into old Germany, complete with blacksmiths, musicians, sword jugglers, axe throwing, archery, pubs, lords and ladies, knights, a parade, dragon quests, horses in a jousting arena, a chapel, and shops selling swords, armor, renaissance clothing, jewelry, and other souvenirs.

Although there were many adults who clearly loved the festivities, there was also a surprising amount of activities geared for kids. Various stages throughout the fair featured entertainers that children are drawn to, including storytellers, jugglers, knights, and a mermaid cove. Game booths, digging for treasure, and riding a giant wooden swing were some of the events my kids enjoyed. So enchanted was my older son with all the weaponry, he decided to spend his own money on a real sword. Where to keep it now that we’ve returned from old Germany has yet to be determined.

In terms of festival costs, parking was $5 and tickets range from $9-$18 per person when purchased online. The shows and scavenger hunt were free. The restaurants and food vendors, shops, and game booths naturally had varying costs, with the children’s activities we found being only $5 or less. Overall, it was money well spent as my kids had a wonderful time traveling back in time, just like Jack and Annie do in their Magic Tree House!

The final weekend of the Festival is coming up! Get your tickets!
